France’s third biggest mountain destination, Isère, is a breath of fresh air.

A true winter-sports playground with a wealth of natural assets, Isère has it all: stunning high peaks, glaciers, forested valleys, three natural parks, wide open spaces, world-renowned resorts and pretty, traditional villages. It’s also easily accessible from the UK – fly to Grenoble Alpes Isère airport, take the train or make the easy drive from Calais.

There are 22 fantastic resorts in Isère, and we want to share eight of our favourites with you.

Isère’s unspoilt surroundings are the perfect place to unwind, recharge and reconnect with nature. Switch off and enjoy the simple beauty of pale winter sunlight streaming through snow-laden branches on a winter walk through one of Europe’s highest spruce forests, thanks to a new marked trail in family-friendly Auris en Oisans.

Or try a Snowga yoga session at 2,000m altitude in Oz en Oisans, a pretty resort with an authentic village feel that is part of the Alpe d’Huez Grand Domaine Ski, the same ski area as Alpe d’Huez.

The traditional village resort of Vaujany is also just a short cable car ride from the heart of this ski area. Breathtaking views of the surrounding summits greet those at the top, while down in the village a huge indoor ice rink awaits, where you can try curling, watch ice hockey or simply skate!

For visitors looking for lively après-ski and adventurous skiing, the world-class resorts of Alpe d’Huez and Les 2 Alpes are our top pick.

Alpe d’Huez has a vast ski area with 250km of slopes and over 2,200m of altitude difference between the highest skiable point and the lowest. Refuel at Camp de Base, a new food destination serving street food and putting local produce in the spotlight.

Les 2 Alpes also does big skiing well, with long descents (ski 2,300m without taking a single lift), snow-sure glacier skiing at 3,600m, a freestyle area and unparalleled off-piste.

Off the beaten track in Isère, you’ll find smaller resorts like Les 7 Laux, a popular spot with freeriders, renowned for its mythical black run, Vallons du Pra.

The resort of Villard de Lans/Corrençon is made up of two villages and is set in the Vercors natural park. The resort holds the Famille Plus Montagne label for its family-friendly credentials. Try out toboggans, bobsledding, snow tubing and more at the innovative snowpark.

Closer to Grenoble is Chamrousse, another family favourite with tree-lined slopes and night-skiing sessions that offer spectacular views over the city lights. Don’t miss the resort’s award-winning ski touring trail specially designed for exploring the slopes under the stars.
